Knowing Jesus As My Great Physician During the Pandemic

By: Ng Joo Kim

In the past, I reacted to prayers for healing with ambivalence. I did not dare set my hopes on it and knew not of prayer that was tried and tested for effecting healing. If I did pray for healing, it was more out of a sentiment that I should at least do something for loved ones and friends suffering from disease. I did not have a heartfelt or deep confidence that Jesus heals.

All this changed for me last year on one fateful Saturday. It was 25 July 2020, and I had been suffering greatly for over two months from tenosynovitis, a painful condition caused by an inflammation of the tendon sheath in my hands. It started first in my right hand, and later affected both my hands. This condition made daily tasks like brushing my teeth, dressing myself and opening a door extremely difficult, as it would send shockwaves of pain through my hands.

During this time, I used painkillers in different formulations just to get through my day. I consumed some of them orally, while others were applied to my skin in the form of plasters or gel. Later, I also had steroids and painkillers injected into my tendon sheath.

Even with those painkillers, I was still writhing in pain after half an hour of typing and had to lie on my couch.

My right arm had to be placed in a splint, and at one point, my right hand swelled like I was an inflatable doll.

During the week of 20 July 2020, I went into panic mode when I realised that I had only two days' supply of a prescription painkiller left. As it was a particularly busy week at work, I did not relish having to go to the doctor just to get more painkillers. Even with those painkillers, I was still writhing in pain after half an hour of typing and had to lie on my couch. Hence, I really needed them to get through my week since my job involved a lot of typing. Thankfully, I managed to find a week’s supply of painkillers in a bag which I thought contained trash. Overcome with joy and relief, I shared this testimony of God’s provision with my Cell group.

Little did I know, God had a greater blessing in store for me.

Upon hearing my testimony, my Cell leader asked the Cell group to pray for my healing. As I did not feel any significant difference after the prayers were said, I thanked them and quietly went to bed. Lo and behold, when I woke up the next morning, the pain was completely gone!

When I went for my scheduled appointment with the orthopaedic doctor that morning, my hands were tested, and the doctor declared that I no longer needed to be in a splint or take any more drugs. God had healed me and removed my pain!

Since then, I have been able to use my hands normally, and every once in a while, I would still touch both my hands with joy and wonder at the healing that had taken place!

The doctor declared that I no longer needed to be in a splint or take any more drugs. God had healed me and removed my pain!

Sometime after the miracle, I suffered from a bout of prolonged abnormal bleeding that the General Practitioner could not treat. As I could not secure an appointment to see an insurance panel specialist promptly, I could only get on my knees and prayed with all my heart for the bleeding to stop. I also meditated on the account of how Jesus healed the woman with the issue of blood in Mark 5, and the bleeding stopped about two weeks later.

Never in my life have I imagined that I would be able to experience not one, but two incidents of divine healing within such a short span of time.

If not for the unexpected delay in securing a specialist appointment, I would not have come to know prayer and meditation on God’s Word as remedies for my ailments. Through this episode, I also learnt that frustrating delays may be a set up by God for a miracle that He wants to perform.

All praise and glory to God for these revelations of His goodness and power!
