Cornerstone Community Services (CCS) recently launched “Cornerstone Kakis”, a new outreach initiative for anyone aged 50 & above, aiming to promote active ageing and build a thriving community of volunteers.
Members of the Cornerstone Kakis Club can look forward to a fun and enriching weekly four-hour session (8.30am-12.30pm) comprising exercise, workshops, and fun activities.
At the inaugural session on 4 March 2024, we saw members coming together for a time of singing and bonding in the Gen Space at Katong Shopping Centre.
Lew Mi Yih, Executive Director of CCS shared, “We’ve always wanted to engage and start something meaningful for the senior community in the Katong area. It was a timely opportunity that we could collaborate with Cornerstone Community Church to reach out to church members with elderly parents or who’re seniors themselves. Our objective is to get them to join the Cornerstone Kakis Club to keep themselves healthy, active and socially engaged. Hence, we’re also organising new activities such as Sports Kakis and Fit Kakis for members to improve their physical strength and stamina.”
Esther Bong, one of the CCS volunteers who facilitates group activities and interactions among members shares the same sentiment. She said, “I volunteer because I want to be part of this community, to age gracefully and become physically strong. There’re a lot of benefits to joining the club such as receiving strong emotional support from one another, and establishing a habit of learning through different activities to prevent dementia. My wish is to see the members grow and give back by volunteering and serving other seniors.”
The club currently has 20 members and is supported by seven volunteers. Recruitment for members is on-going and an annual membership fee of $10 applies. Interested parties can contact Lillian at 6344 8063 to find out more, or register online at tinyurl.com/CornerstoneKakis.
